Restaurant apparel has a harder job than most. It has to look right in a dining room, take heat and grease in a kitchen, get washed constantly, and still look presentable six months in. Style matters, but fabric and construction decide whether it lasts.

Front of house and back of house want genuinely different things. FOH is customer-facing, so fit and color matter — a fitted tee, a slim polo, or a button-up with an apron over it. BOH needs durability and heat management above all, which usually means a looser cut and a fabric that breathes.

If you only decorate one piece, make it the apron. It sits at chest height, it's in every guest interaction, and it's the most photographed thing your staff wears.

We'd recommend embroidery on aprons and any collared staff wear. Thread survives commercial laundering in a way print doesn't, and on a canvas or denim apron a stitched logo simply looks better — it reads as intentional rather than applied. Printing is the better call for kitchen tees and anything full-color.

One thing worth knowing: dark aprons and dark shirts need a white underbase under a light print, which counts as an extra color on a screen print. It's a real production step, not an upcharge someone invented. Embroidery sidesteps it entirely.

Fine dining leans toward crisp button-ups, dark tones, and understated embroidery — a small left-chest mark rather than a logo across the back. Casual and gastropub has the most freedom: printed tees, denim or canvas aprons, and more personality in the design. Cafés and coffee shops usually want a soft tee and a good apron, and that's the whole uniform. Food trucks need something that works in heat and reads from a queue, so bold type on the back earns its place.
